MIM’s Mini Music Makers Series

January 10, 2017

The Musical Instrument Museum, located in North Phoenix, offers diverse educational programs for youth of a variety of ages. From your youngest music makers to high school students, MIM has something to offer every family.

MIM’s Mini Music Makers Series, an early childhood music-and-movement program, aims to enrich children’s lives by providing a safe, interactive, and engaging environment for children to explore a variety of music from around the world. Each class is structured around developmentally appropriate activities for children to interact with and create their own music. By exploring music through song, dance, and basic instruments, children develop musical and social skills.

Early childhood music programs are also proven to foster physical, emotional, and cognitive growth. Each 4–week session explores a new musical culture in a developmentally appropriate way where caregivers and children can discover new musical worlds while actively participating in the music. Classes are structured around activities that allow children to interact with and create their own music. By exploring music through song, dance, and basic instruments, children develop a love of music and music making.

Mini Music Maker’s primary goals and objectives include:

1.To promote music in the lives of young children as a tool for sensory-motor exploration and learning.

2.To nurture and develop children’s natural musical abilities.

3.To foster bonding between caregivers and children and to create a musical community.

4.To encourage and develop musical competency through practicing steady beat and pitch matching.

5.To develop the motor, loco motor, and coordination skills of children.

6.To provide a positive experience with music and music making at a young age.

7.To explore new musical cultures.

Classes are offered on select Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays throughout the year.

Musical Adventures Series, designed for ages 6-10, aims to educate young children about the world’s cultures through music. By providing opportunities for group music making and discovery, Musical Adventures engages participants in hands-on experiences with different types of music from around the world. The program promotes cultural awareness and increases a child’s appreciation for music while aiding in the development of essential academic skills. Each class includes active music making, geographic exploration, gallery time, and a take-home instrument craft. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of every month.

Older students (grades 6 – 12) can participate in Junior Museum Guide training. Participants learn about cultures from around the world, participate in music making, and discover the wide world of music. Junior Museum Guides train to lead tours while exploring MIM’s unique galleries and exhibits. Participants who complete all four classes are given the opportunity to lead group tours during specific Experience Weekends. Four-week sessions are offered twice a year during the fall and spring.

By offering sequential educational programming for youth, MIM aims to create lifelong music lovers and museum patrons. Always emphasizing quality experiences, these supplemental programs engage participants in developmentally appropriate ways in order to promote cultural awareness and build musical competency. We hope that you and your family will join us in MIM’s classes!
